The San Francisco Giants made a series of very interesting moves at the 2026 MLB trade deadline, shipping out a decent selection of good players.
Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray, Tyler Mahle, and Heliot Ramos were some of the top players dealt. But the return Buster Posey got for Erik Miller is by far the most interesting, as they landed Marcelo Mayer, a former star prospect of the Boston Red Sox, for the lefty.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale shared a report about Mayer's reaction to joining the Giants, and the former star Red Sox prospect revealed he is "thrilled" to have joined the Giants this summer at the trade deadline.
Marcelo Mayer is 'thrilled' to join Giants after Red Sox trade
"Infielder Marcelo Mayer, dumped by the Boston Red Sox at the trade deadline and subjected to erroneous off-the-field gossip rumors, is thrilled that he's now with the San Francisco Giants and is eagerly looking forward to working with infield guru Ron Washington," Nightengale writes.
This is exactly the kind of message that Giants fans will love to hear about one of the more intriguing moves of the entire MLB trade deadline.
Mayer is a former star prospect of the Red Sox who just couldn't figure things out in Boston over the last few seasons.
He's only 23 years old, under club control through the 2031 season, and has shown promise here and there in his professional baseball career.

In 114 games in the big leagues and 332 at-bats total, Mayer has posted 0.3 bWAR with 18 doubles, 74 hits, 39 runs scored, one triple, 10 home runs, 32 RBIs, three stolen bases, 24 walks, a .223 batting average, and a .625 OPS.
There is some doubt about how effective Mayer can be, but maybe his defense can improve with Ron Washington teaching him like he did Arraez, and maybe he can figure things out offensively in San Francisco's spacious ballpark
Mayer is one of the more fascinating additions any team has made this season, and while he's yet to be activated off the injured list, his excitement for joining the Giants is a good starting point for one of San Francisco's key deadline additions.
