Former San Diego Padres top prospect Leo De Vries still isn’t quite sure how to process the stunning trade deadline move that sent him to the Athletics.
De Vries along with RHP Braden Nett, RHP Henry Baez, and Eduarniel Núñez were sent to the Athletics in exchange for closer Mason Miller on Thursday. De Vries was the top prospect in the Padres’ system, and the top prospect in all of baseball, per MLB Pipeline.
He signed with the Padres in 2024 as an international free agent for $4.2 million. Now, the 18-year-old switch-hitting shortstop heads elsewhere.
After the shocking move, De Vries kept it short in a message on Instagram, clearly still struggling to process what has taken place.
“I really don’t know what to say but thanks for everything. @padres,” De Vries said on Instagram with a picture of him donning a San Diego uniform.
De Vries has been highly touted for his all-around skill set at such a young age, which has been on display in 2025. In High-A this season, De Vries is hitting .245 with 8 home runs, 47 RBI’s and a .761 OPS in 84 games.
Giving up De Vries for a relief pitcher could be quite the risky move. Despite Miller not hitting the open market until 2030, the need for Miller could be brought into question given that the Padres are already equipped with plenty of high-leverage arms including Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada, and Adrian Morejon. Nonetheless, the deal is done, and the Padres will now focus on the present after giving away their most highly-touted prospect.
