The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a new deal with Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle on Tuesday. Now, all the focus is on trying to extend quarterback Brock Purdy.
The Purdy contract conversation has been ongoing in San Francisco, with a new report stating that things could be done "relatively soon."
Rumors have swirled that Purdy could get a contract worth $50 million per year, which would be a gigantic payday for the 2022 NFL Draft pick who was Mr. Irrelevant.
Well, former NFL cornerback Patrick Peterson, who recently retired, was asked by Kay Adams if he thought Purdy was worth that, and his answer was as blunt as could be.
"Honestly, no," Peterson replied. "But what these quarterbacks are going for right now, that's kind of like the going rate."
"I wouldn't pay him that, but he's probably going to get 50," Peterson added.
Each of Trevor Lawrence, Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Jordan Love are in the $55 million per year range with Tua Tagovailoa just north of $53 million per season. Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott is on top with a $60 million per year deal, so Purdy getting $50 million is in the ballpark with the others.
Purdy did take the 49ers to the Super Bowl, although paying him that much money doesn't sit well with Peterson. But, as he said, that is the way the game is going now, so that looks to be a realistic option for the San Francisco signal-caller.
