Former Denver Broncos coach lands new head coaching position

The NFL had some breaking news on Monday when the Tennessee Titans chose to fire head coach Brian Callahan following a 1-5 start to the season.

Callahan was fired six games into his second season as the Titans' head coach. His 4-19 record was something the organization felt it could no longer tolerate, and he was shown the door. Callahan was once part of the Denver Broncos and was an offensive assistant on the team that won Super Bowl 50. He was also interviewed by the team for its head coaching vacancy in 2022 before the Broncos settled on Nathaniel Hackett.

He has been replaced — on an interim basis — by a guy who also has ties to the Broncos. Mike McCoy was named as the replacement for Callahan. McCoy was hired as a senior offensive assistant this offseason and will take over the head coaching duties for at least the rest of this season.

After eight seasons as part of the coaching staff of the Carolina Panthers, McCoy was hired as the Broncos' offensive coordinator in 2009. He was credited with building an offense that helped make Tim Tebow successful in the wild "Tebowmania" year of 2011.

Following the 2012 season, he was selected as the head coach of the San Diego Chargers. He held that role for four seasons before the Broncos brought him back as offensive coordinator for the 2017 season. But that year, the Broncos had Trevor Siemian as their starting quarterback and McCoy became a casualty when the Broncos went on a long losing streak in the middle of the season.

He was fired that November. Since then, he has held roles with the Arizona Cardinals, Jacksonville Jaguars and the Titans. McCoy began his coaching career in 2000 following a five-year playing career that began when the Broncos signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Utah.
