The Denver Broncos made a huge move to acquire wide receiver Jaylen Waddle in a trade with the Miami Dolphins. But that move may soon precipitate another big decision within the position.
Recently, Alex Kay of Bleacher Report listed some players around the league whom teams should avoid offering a contract extension to. It was surprising to see Marvin Mims Jr. on that list. On Thursday, former Broncos wide receiver Bennie Fowler, who won a Super Bowl ring in 2015, suggested that Mims can already see that coming.
Fowler appeared on the DNVR podcast along with Broncos radio play-by-play announcer Dave Logan and made it clear that Mims' time in Denver could be short-lived.
— DNVR Broncos (@DNVR_Broncos) March 26, 2026"I like Marvin Mims and his skill set a lot and I know you do as well, but I also think this... he's going into a contract year and to me, if I'm Marvin, I know I'm not getting extended here. You're not gonna have a $27 million receiver, a $30 million receiver and extend me", said Fowler.
Logan pushes back a little and though he acknowledges it's possible, he suggests that the team could move on from him more because of the fact that the team just hasn't incorporated him on offense as much as many think they should have, rather than the financial reasoning.
Either way, it seems there will be a chance the Broncos move on from Mims following the 2026 season, as teams aren't going to want to tie up too much money within one position group.
That said, the Broncos have one of the best kick and punt returners in the league and to this point, that's where Mims has made his name. He has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his first two seasons in the league as a result of that.
That is a valuable trait that could get Mims a contract extension alone. But he could also have a chance to become a bigger part of the offense with Davis Webb taking over the play-calling duties. Mims showed himself to be a big-play specialist in the postseason, making big plays against Buffalo and New England.

While Fowler has a respectable and sensible take on the subject, the Broncos will likely keep Mims at all costs rather than just allowing him to walk in free agency over money. It will certainly be a situation to keep tabs on as the 2026 season goes along.
