The Boston Red Sox will face a tough decision regarding third baseman Alex Bregman in the offseason. Bregman is expected to opt out of his deal, barring something drastic happening over the next few months.
Considering Bregman has played well this year, and outside of the tough injury he dealt with for a few months, he’s been one of the better players in the AL, there's reason to believe that the Red Sox want him around.
The Houston Astros allowed him to walk a year ago, a decision that made some sense from their perspective.
Will Alex Bregman be overpaid this offseason?
While the Astros shouldn't continue to give up on elite players, it was the decision they ultimately made.
Now, in free agency, Bregman could be paid like some of the top players in baseball, and to certain industry insiders, it’s even more than he should be. That includes Robert Murray of FanSided, who had some interesting comments about him eventually being overpaid this winter.
“I was really surprised how much the report took off that Bregman was set to opt out of his contract with the Boston Red Sox. Isn’t that obvious?
“...But a player of Bregman’s caliber and his performance in a big city is going to put increased eyeballs on him... That thinking feels applicable to Bregman. Because his price tag in free agency is likely going to get irrational, and his agent Scott Boras should be in position to capitalize,” he wrote.

It's always tough to say that a player like Bregman could be overpaid in Major League Baseball, considering the many contracts around the league.
The reality of the situation is that these guys are getting paid more than ever right now, and market value is market value. However, Bregman isn't exactly the perfect player, and considering he's getting older, it might not be unfair to say what Murray did.
