Former Arsenal star tips Man United boss Ruben Amorim to be 'perfect fit' for Premier League rivals

Manchester United faced a crushing 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in their last Premier League match on September 14 at Etihad Stadium.

With their loss in the first Manchester derby of the season, United now rank 14th in the league table with four points after securing only one win in four matches so far.

To make matters worse, the Red Devils were also eliminated from the second round of the Carabao Cup after suffering a humiliating 12-11 loss on penalties against EFL League Two club Grimsby Town last month.

United's struggling form has raised questions about head coach Ruben Amorim's management and tactics, including his 3-4-3 formation. However, the Portuguese manager has publicly admitted his aversion to bringing on changes in his system.

Speaking after the loss at Etihad, Amorim told reporters,

"There are a lot of things that you have no idea what happened during these months, but I accept that," as per Reuters.

"But I'm not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you'll have to change the men. And we will talk about that every game that we lose. So I play my way, and I'm going to play my way until I want to change."

Now, former Arsenal star Paul Merson has claimed that Amorim would have been a 'perfect fit' at Chelsea instead of Man United.

What did Paul Merson say about Man United boss Ruben Amorim?

Since taking charge at Old Trafford in November 2024, Amorim has led his squad to win only 17 out of 47 matches across all competitions.

On the topic of the Red Devils' form under Amorim's management, Merson mentioned in his column on Sky Sports that the 40-year-old style of play and formation would have suited the squad at Stamford Bridge better, and wrote,

"Ruben Amorim, the way he wants to play, is a worry. He won't change. He'll look at it and say 'I've got where I am today by playing the way I play,' using three at the back and high wing-backs. He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea. They've got world-class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto, they've got the best holding midfield player in the league in Moises Caicedo. It would fit the players."

"You look at Man United and this system does not suit the squad they've got at all. The two wing-backs are nowhere near it, nowhere near good enough. And they are a big part of this formation working. No legs in midfield. Everything is up against him."

It remains to be seen if Amorim decides to switch things up or if his squad makes his system work and earn a win in United's upcoming clash against Chelsea in the Premier League on September 20, at Old Trafford.
