Flyers, Oilers may lose out on $7 million goalie free agent in shocking twist

The Philadelphia Flyers and Edmonton Oilers both could use a better goaltender.

But the guy they've likely both been targeting could soon be off the market in a shocking twist.

That goalie, Jake Allen, is supposed to be a free agent from the New Jersey Devils. Except in the past day or so, reports have emerged that the Devils want to keep their stellar backup on board.

NHL insider Frank Seravelli reported this Tuesday morning: "Down to the wire: sources indicate #njdevils have made progress in an effort to keep goaltender Jake Allen in a Devils uniform. Not done, but the premier *pending* free agent goaltender may well not make it to market."

Without Allen on the market, it becomes almost devoid of options. Possible target John Gibson has already been traded, too, so he's not available.

The Flyers and Oilers could both be left out in the cold.

The Flyers would be looking to replace Samuel Ersson and Ivan Fedotov, neither of whom came close to a 90% save percentage in 2024-25.

The Oilers made it to the Stanley Cup Finals, but both Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard were exposed as flawed netminders en route to a second consecutive runner-up finish.

Philadelphia and Edmonton weren't the only two teams linked to Allen, but they were names that seemed to pop up again and again.

If Allen signs to stay in Jersey, it's a huge blow to the hopes of these two hockey teams.

At this point, they'll be hoping for one more late twist back in their direction.
