Florida State' Mike Norvell says Noles are championship bound despite hot seat

With growing concerns about his future at Florida State, coach Mike Norvell vowed that the Seminoles will return to championship form “in the very near future.”

FSU fell to 4-5 after a 24-10 loss to Clemson and look completely different from the team that shocked Alabama to start the season. Norvell defended his tenure while acknowledging the program’s recent struggles. His team is just 2-12 in ACC play dating to 2024 after winning the conference title in 2023.

“I’m fully aware the outside narrative around our team is not good around me, probably not good,” Norvell said. “That will not affect the job that I’m going to show up and do. I’m going to pour everything I have into this team with a championship expectation.”

Norvell pointed to his previous success as proof that he can rebuild the program again. “I’ve actually won a championship, and we’re going to do it again,” he said.

But not everyone is sold. ESPN analyst Pete Thamel said Norvell will be the next college football coach fired on the latest ESPN College GameDay podcast.

Also, Florida State athletic director Michael Alford recently said the program will undergo a comprehensive review after the season, fueling speculation about Norvell’s job status. 

The sixth-year coach isn't bothered by it all. "The results haven’t been good enough,” Norvell said. “But we’re going to take that step, and we’re going to get the job done.”

Florida State meets Virginia Tech on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET, ACCN).
