The Calgary Flames couldn't justify continuing this partnership.
On Tuesday, they placed defenseman Joni Jurmo on unconditional waivers with the intent to buy out his entry-level contract, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.
Jurmo was a third-round pick of the Flames in 2020.
The 6-foot-4 defenseman played in his native Finland through the 2023-24 season.
He came to North America for the 2024-25 season and went to the AHL Calgary Wranglers, but he didn't score a point there in 17 games.
Jurmo also suited up in the ECHL for the Rapid City Rush, where he had 10 points in 12 games.

Given that Jurmo only had one year left on his deal, it seems unlikely he would've attended much higher up the Calgary system before becoming a free agent, anyway.
This move frees up a spot for the Flames to use on someone else, while Jurmo can pursue a signing elsewhere in the NHL or potentially back in Europe.
