An apparent “fire rainbow” was visible across areas of New Jersey on Tuesday, a rare atmospheric phenomenon that hadn’t blanketed the skies of the Garden State in seven years.
A rare “fire rainbow” was seen in the sky over these trees in Edison, N.J. early Tuesday afternoon, on a partly sunny day with no rain clouds in sight. NJ.comThe rarity was witnessed amid the clouds over Edison in the western portion of Middlesex County at around 2:15 p.m., nj.com reported.
The rainbow is typically flat with a horizontal band of colors formed by sunlight refracting through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds, according to the International Cloud Atlas.
Its colors can intensify into bright reds and oranges that mimic flames in the sky — giving it the fire rainbow moniker fire rainbows.
