Fernando Mendoza pro day takeaways: Indiana QB confirms why Raiders have such an easy No. 1 decision

1 hour ago 3

The Fernando Mendoza line for the NFL stayed the same after the Indiana national champion and Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback returned to campus to close the book on the 2026 pre-draft season.

Mendoza is still the top prospect at any position and remains a lock to be selected No. 1 overall by the Las Vegas Raiders to kick off the first round on April 23. With a massive contingent of Raiders' staffers and officials, including new head coach Klint Kubiak and GM John Spytek, Mendoza picked up where he left off during one special season in Bloomington.

Here's breaking down why Mendoza remains a sure bet for his presumptive future team:

3 takeaways from Fernando Mendoza's pro day

1. The accuracy

Mendoza officially made 56 throws, from quick hitches to deep balls, in his compressed throwing session. He kept the flow through his successive passes in a crisp workout that he delivered in fewer than 30 minutes.

Only three of Mendoza's passes weren't completed to his busy targets, which included two fellow 2026 draft picks at wide receiver, Omar Cooper Jr. and Elijah Sarratt. Mendoza was off, and one throw, and two others were dropped. Mendoza was consistent in his dropbacks and wasted no time in getting to an accurate rhythm.

For a team part-owned by pocket-passing GOAT Tom Brady, watching the 6-5, now near 240-pound QB go to work had to be thrilling as a sign of things to come soon at Allegiant Stadium.

2. The wow factor

Mendoza scripted his session to end on a high note. He was flinging lasers downfield when it came time to drop in his long balls. Cooper showed more of his first-round caliber big-play ability by streaking to snag a 60-yard strike.

There was no question that Mendoza was in complete control with consistent zip and velocity on his passes from short to intermediate to deep throws.

3. Those intangibles

Mendoza has bulked up to further look the part and showed up sharp and in terrific peak athletic shape. He was locked into impressing the Raiders again and was savvy in creating an environment to seem even more put-together with his teammates and coaches.

Mendoza didn't need to put in so much extra work to secure his draft status, but the fact that he did should make the Raiders feel confident there's almost zero chance he will be a bust.
