The Trump Justice Department is “actively” investigating crimes fueled by antisemitism in New York City and has sent a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani demanding answers about the “unequal treatment” of Jews.
The extraordinary move comes after cops say crazed 51-year-old Raul Morales screamed “Allahu Akbar!” while stabbing a Jewish man and an Asian man in separate harrowing attacks on the Upper West Side last month.
Many Jewish leaders were quick to blame the Muslim mayor — an outspoken critic of Israel who has accused it of committing a “genocide” during the war in Gaza and called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu — for the stabbings.
Hate crimes have overall surged in the Big Apple under Mamdani, with more than half of this year’s incidents to date targeting Jewish New Yorkers, according to unsettling new crime statistics released by the NYPD on Monday.
US Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who heads the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, last week discussed complaints about local hate crimes with Dov Hikind, founder of Americans Against Antisemitism and a former Brooklyn state assemblyman.
Her office also sent a letter to Mamdani to answer for the troubling incidents.
“The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is actively investigating and prosecuting hate crimes, including antisemitism, in New York City and nationwide,” the Justice Department said in a statement to The Post.
“The Civil Rights Division has an extensive and active portfolio of antisemitism enforcement, including indictments, prosecutions, settlements, and investigations across the country.”
Hikind told The Post that Dhillon informed him she sent a letter to Mamdani asking for a response about the “unequal treatment” of Jews in the Big Apple.
“The Justice Department is taking antisemitism very seriously,’’ Hikind said.
“The king of antisemitism is none other than Mayor Mamdani.’’
The head of one of America’s leading Jewish civil-rights groups also suggested Mamdani’s Israel-bashing rhetoric is fueling violence.
“Hey,@NYCMayor Mamdani — Law enforcement says the man they arrested for attacking a synagogue in Sarasota, FL, was motivated by social media propaganda,” tweeted Jonathan Greeenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.
“The man reportedly reposted your video demonizing the Jewish state. Words have consequences. Your inflammatory rhetoric can lead to violence.
“Jewish people and institutions are being attacked in NYC and across the country because of hateful and demonizing rhetoric,’’ Greenblatt said.
“The Jewish community deserves leaders who will confront antisemitism and protect Jewish New Yorkers, not fan the flames of hate.”
The mayor’s office did not respond to a Post request for comment.
Mamdani has previously insisted he takes antisemitism seriouisly and has dramatically increased funding to combat hate.
