Falcons warned that trading $32 million 'epic draft failure' would be a mistake that backfires

For most of the offseason, all eyes have been on Kirk Cousins and whether the Falcons would trade him to shed the large salary he commands. However, after the Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers, that last hope seemed to disappear.

Now, the Falcons must wait to see if a quarterback gets hurt either before or during the season.

“Every time a quarterback gets hurt, the Falcons are going to be like, ‘Hello, look at the guy we got,’” NFL Insider Ian Rapoport said. “He suggested that Atlanta could even land a premium draft pick by trading Cousins during the season if a team becomes desperate enough.”

Atlanta may have another option in tight end Kyle Pitts, who has become a topic of discussion among other teams. Pitts might be interested in joining a different offense.

“But it appears, talking to some other teams, they think Atlanta is at least open to the possibility and Pitts might be as well. I'm told he loves Atlanta, this is not a situation where he's requesting a trade, but if he has a chance to go to maybe a better offense where he's more featured,” ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler said.

ATL All Day’s Nick Halden believes that letting go of Pitts would be a mistake.

“On one hand, you have the fact that the presence of the veteran is a reminder of an epic draft failure. On the other hand, you're selling a player at the lowest possible value and not giving Penix a chance to see if he is able to turn back the clock to the pass catcher's rookie production,” Halden wrote. “With this in mind, trading Kyle Pitts would be a mistake that gives up on a player when the clear decision is to play the deal out.”

No matter who Pitts plays for, this is his last year to prove himself to Atlanta or any other team. There is no clear direction as of right now, but the Falcons will keep listening in on trade calls. Atlanta could make the mistake of trading him, but they could also discover something in his game they have been missing.
