The Beat is excited to exclusively reveal that Nakama Press, an imprint of Mad Cave Studios, is publishing A Little Step Vol. 1 by Mimi Szeto this fall. This poignant graphic novel draws from the author’s own experiences, offering a heartfelt glimpse into the journey of adolescence.
Set against the backdrop of 2000s Hong Kong, this standalone release beautifully encapsulates the delicate nature of teenage friendships and the quiet bravery it takes to pursue one’s passions. With stunning illustrations and a narrative that resonates with emotional authenticity, A Little Step follows the journey of a girl who loves to draw and a boy who finds solace in his guitar—two young souls navigating the uncertainty of their lives, boldly stepping forward together.

Yu-kiu Lau, a fifth-year student, had always dreamed of studying at a foreign art university. However, because she feared others’ critiques of her work, she couldn’t find it within herself to submit any of her creations. One day, while Yu-kiu was in the art room, she heard a beautiful guitar sound from downstairs. It turned out to be played by Ho-yuet Lee, a classmate with a questionable reputation…
