Ex-Warriors NBA champion Jonathan Kuminga gives Lakers hopeful $16M contract update

The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to make one final roster move before the offseason comes to an end, but it has not been an easy process. Former NBA champion Jonathan Kuminga has been one of the Lakers' top targets ever since LeBron James informed the organization he would not be returning.

Negotiating with Kuminga has proven to be difficult, something the Golden State Warriors experienced last season. Now, Kuminga is seeking a contract worth more than $20 million annually.

“Jonathan Kuminga is demanding a salary in free agency exceeding $20 million annually, per The Athletic. Kuminga prefers a sign-and-trade from the Hawks over leaving outright, simply due to the added financial implications. The Cavaliers and Lakers are the finalists for Kuminga," NBA reporter Evan Sidery posted.

That asking price has been too steep for both the Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, especially for a player who is still looking to establish himself. As a result, neither team has been willing to meet his original demands.

“Neither the Cavaliers nor Lakers are willing to offer $20+ million per year, which was the original asking price,” Sidery wrote.

The Lakers remain interested in Kuminga, but they have been unwilling to exceed the salary range they believe is reasonable. That disagreement has been the biggest obstacle in negotiations. However, Kuminga has reportedly lowered his expectations to a more realistic number.

“There’s two teams [interested] right now. It’s the Cavs and the Lakers. I personally believe he will end up with the Lakers… He’s willing to hold out as long as possible… He wants somewhere in that sweet spot of $14-16 million,” NBA insider Brett Siegel said.

A contract in the $16 million range is much more manageable for the Lakers and could make a deal far more realistic. Los Angeles remains intrigued by Kuminga's potential fit alongside Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves.

The Lakers are expected to remain aggressive in their pursuit if the financial terms continue to move in the right direction. Adding Kuminga would give Los Angeles another young, athletic piece to build around its star core for the future.
