Ex-Warrior Klay Thompson gets trade update for Mavericks, and it makes sense

1 hour ago 3

Former Golden State Warriors standout Klay Thompson finds himself in a position that nobody would have expected a few years ago. Thompson, who decided to sign with the Dallas Mavericks, clearly was not expecting the organization to move on from Luka Doncic when it did.

Nobody did, so it's impossible to blame Thompson for taking that opportunity in Dallas. Regardless, given his current situation, it doesn't seem like he has too much of a fit with the organization.

According to the latest report, the Mavericks are looking to move on from him, though the only way they do so at the moment is via a trade.

This report indicates that the Mavericks have no interest in buying him out at the moment.

“The Mavericks, league sources say, continue to explore Klay Thompson's trade market, showing little interest — to this point — in buying out the four-time champion’s final remaining season ($17.5 million) of a three-year, $50 million deal with Dallas,” Marc Stein wrote.

I don't think it would make much sense to just eat $17.5 million for a guy who still has a lot of value in the Mavericks' locker room.

I understand the idea of trading him, but it really doesn't make much sense to buy him out. Dallas is expected to be a decent team this season, but it won't be a contender if things go as planned. Thompson might want to be in a different situation, so we could see if that happens.
