The New York Giants' possibly naming Jaxson Dart their starting quarterback over veteran Russell Wilson should not come as a surprise.
Ex-Giants QB Chris Simms argues that the Giants will leverage Dart to the fullest, even name him their starter, if he impresses the team enough in the OTAs.
"Gosh, I would not be shocked if it started off right away. I wouldn’t be shocked. I don’t expect the Giants to be a super team here, right? I’m not picking the Giants to go to the playoffs," Simms told Kay Adams on the Up & Adams Show.
"Those are things I look at to go, if Jaxson Dart is phenomenal through training camp and OTAs and has a really good preseason, and Russell Wilson’s just okay and doesn’t look all that sharp, I don’t think they’ll be scared to start Jaxson Dart here."
So far, Dart has managed to impress in the rookie minicamp.
SNY's Connor Hughes confirmed that belief.
"(Dart) looked comfortable and in control. I’ve covered rookie camps every year dating back to 2015 (absent the COVID season). I’ve lost track of the number of young quarterbacks (draft picks, undrafted, tryouts) I’ve seen throw. They’re almost always jittery. You’ll see them hitch because they’re not trusting their eyes. They’ll force the issue. They’ll sail passes because they’re nervous. You didn’t get that with Dart. That impressed me," Hughes wrote.
With that said, Dart will need to outshine Wilson and Jameis Winston as he currently sits as a third-string QB on the Giants roster.
