Ex-Michigan assistant coach caught on security footage minutes before allegedly hacking explicit student files

Federal prosecutors have alleged they have dozens of photos showing former Michigan co-offensive coordinator Matt Weiss entering three team offices right before he hacked college students’ personal accounts, according to a search warrant affidavit by the FBI.

Multiple outlets have reported that as part of a filing in Detroit federal court late this week, that investigators included photos of Weiss accessing the football team facilities before allegedly using computers in the quarterbacks and tight ends meeting rooms to get into the accounts.

Weiss was indicted on March 20, with federal authorities accusing him of stealing private photos and videos from more than 3,300 student athletes — with many of them being women — from more than 100 universities across the United States.

The photo evidence from security footage that prosecutors submitted last week came as Weiss’ legal team attempted to get the charges dismissed through multiple recent motions.

Weiss’ lawyers filed two recent motions in November and December trying to have the charges — 14 counts of unauthorized access and 10 counts of aggravated identity theft — tossed.

The lawyers have questioned the constitutionality of warrants by the University of Michigan Police Department and the discovery of evidence by the FBI, which they allege came to light through the UMPD’s investigation.

Federal prosecutors responded, according to the Detroit Free Press, that Weiss is pushing back about the way evidence was discovered and not the charges themselves.

“Weiss does not challenge the FBI federal warrant directly. He does not claim that this warrant’s affidavit lacks probable cause. He does not claim that this warrant was overbroad or lacked particularity. And he does not – and cannot – claim that the federal warrant included any information obtained by UMPD during its search of devices pursuant to the warrants that Weiss challenges,” the government’s filing read.

Weiss is also facing a civil lawsuit by more than 70 women who say he hacked into private accounts to steal private photos.

He was the offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh but was fired in February 2023 following the allegations.
