The biggest free agent on the market is undoubtedly LeBron James, as he currently has the NBA on hold. Not only is James holding up the next wave of free agency, but he is also delaying the NBA schedule.
James appeared in New York this week and discussed his decision-making process. He also provided an update on the type of team he wants to join.
“What's most important is that I want to compete. I want to compete at a high level. I want to join a franchise that shares the same model as myself. That's like practicing championship habits every day,” James said.
It appears James is nearing a decision, with the four-time NBA champion in the final stages of choosing his next team.
“It’s decision time for LeBron James… The Leading suitors have been CLE, MIA, GSW, PHI, and MIN…. LeBron James has made it clear privately that he wants to go somewhere he can compete for a championship. Somewhere he feels he finds that happiness from a team environment and CULTURE that he can uplift,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said.
Everyone is now waiting for James to choose one of those five teams. However, according to a recent report from NBA insider Evan Sidery, that decision could come within the next couple of days.
“LeBron James is likely to make his free agency decision within the next 48 hours as momentum is building behind the scenes. The Cavaliers, Heat, Sixers, Timberwolves, and Warriors are the finalists. Once LeBron announces, the final wave of free agency would kick off for teams,” Sidery wrote.
If James makes his decision within the next two days, it would open up the rest of the league's offseason. Several teams have players waiting in free agency or have structured their cap space with the hope of landing James.
This has been one of the wildest NBA offseasons in recent memory, largely because James has been able to put the entire league on hold. No matter which team he chooses, he is expected to make an immediate impact on a championship contender.
