The Golden State Warriors understand the importance of signing LeBron James this offseason, and they do not appear ready to end their pursuit until he commits to another team.
Golden State has explored every avenue in its effort to recruit James. The process reportedly began with Stephen Curry meeting with the four-time NBA champion to discuss the possibility of joining the Warriors.
“Pairing him with Stephen Curry is going to be something that the Warriors are going to pursue over the next few weeks… It seemed very doubtful, it seemed low percentage, now it’s kind of questionable. Now there’s going to be some legs to this… That same source told us that Steph is planning on meeting and talking with LeBron about potentially joining the Warriors over the course of the next few weeks leading up to free agency,” NBA insider Brett Siegel said.
James has taken a patient approach to free agency, and no one knows which direction he is ultimately leaning. His agent, Rich Paul, recently admitted that even he does not know when James will make his decision.
“There is none. I wish I knew. He’s taking his time. He’s really evaluating things taking his time. I’ve really left him alone. Play golf, do the things you need to do. He understands where things are. When he’s ready he’ll let me know,” Paul said.
Although Paul did not reveal James' plans, he spoke highly of what a Warriors team featuring James could look like, offering insight into just how dangerous that pairing would be.
“If we’re talking strictly basketball, you don’t want to play them. You definitely don’t want to play them in a playoff series. You don’t want to get to the trade deadline and have little surface edges type of moves made. You talk about just basketball brilliance of mind and experience, production. It’s pretty tough, Max,” Paul stated.
While those comments are only Paul's opinion, they could be viewed as an encouraging sign for Golden State. His praise of the Warriors' potential fit with James is likely to fuel even more speculation as the four-time NBA champion continues to weigh his options.
James remains the biggest free agent on the market, and his prolonged decision has left several teams waiting before making additional moves. Following Paul's comments, the Warriors have every reason to believe they are still firmly in the mix as they await James' final decision.
