ESPN predicts three Tigers to make AL All-Star team, but not Tarik Skubal

The Detroit Tigers have been one of the biggest disappointments around MLB this season, but that doesn't mean some individuals haven't been great.

Tarik Skubal, before his injury, had a 2.70 ERA and was surely on track to be a top Cy Young finalist and All-Star recipient. He could still earn an All-Star nod even though he's missed a lot of time this season.

But, ESPN's David Schoenfield predicted that three Tigers not named Skubal would make the AL All-Star team this year, each incredibly deserving.

Three Tigers predicted to make All-Star team, but not Tarik Skubal

Schoenfield predicted that catcher Dillon Dingler, infielder and superstar rookie Kevin McGonigle, and outfielder Riley Greene would be named All-Stars this year.

"Dingler has excellent power numbers to go along with good defense," Schoenfield writes. "This should be the first of many All-Star appearances for McGonigle. Greene sneaks in over Ceddane Rafaela and Randy Arozarena in the outfield."

All of these players are deserving of an All-Star nod, though of this group, McGonigle might be the most deserving.

He has put up 3.4 bWAR this season, which is third among AL position players behind only Bobby Witt Jr. and Cody Bellinger.

So far in his rookie season, across 63 games, he has 69 hits, 40 runs scored, 14 doubles, three triples, four homers, 24 RBIs, nine steals, 38 walks to 36 strikeouts, a .291 batting average, and an .820 OPS.

Dingler has 2.1 bWAR this season across 59 games, and is pairing solid defense with 14 homers, 50 hits, 12 doubles, 44 RBIs, 29 runs scored, 22 walks to 47 strikeouts with a .235 batting average and an .808 OPS.

Greene has just 1.6 bWAR, but he has a .305 batting average and an .844 OPS to go with 73 hits, 33 runs scored, 16 doubles, six homers, 29 RBIs, and a 34-to-76 walk-to-strikeout ratio.

There might be other players who could earn this All-Star spot over Greene, as Arozarena of the Seattle Mariners and Rafaela of the Boston Red Sox might be more deserving than Greene. But Schoenfield gives the nod to the Tigers outfielder for his better offense.

Fans might have some problem with Greene's All-Star selection in this prediction, but McGonigle and Dingler shouldn't be an issue.

But seeing the Tigers send three players to the All-Star Game, none of which being Skubal, would be a very strange outcome that Tigers fans might have a hard time believing if they were told as such before the season began.
