ESPN insider calls it a 'no-brainer' for Browns to start Colorado legend Shedeur Sanders over Dillon Gabriel, Joe Flacco

Shedeur Sanders has been one of the most talked-about players of the Browns’ offseason—for reasons both on and off the field. After a surprising fall in the NFL Draft and some off-the-field concerns, Sanders has yet to receive first-team reps in training camp. Despite these setbacks, he’s earning attention for something that sets him apart from most rookies: his immediate impact in the community.

“I’ll be honest with you, I’ve never seen what Shedeur Sanders is doing this early on in a player’s career,” said former NFL receiver Cecil Shorts on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan. “I’ve never seen that before, I’ve never seen a rookie come into the league and before he even played a snap is already in the Garden Valley Projects … All the things he’s doing (in the community). It’s a special thing he’s doing, that’s not normal.”

However, the Browns don’t appear to have much faith in Sanders at this point. Last week, he wasn’t even throwing to receivers—he was throwing to equipment staff.

“Shedeur Sanders apparently is throwing not to receivers but to equipment guys,” ESPN’s Aaron Goldhammer said. “They have got equipment guys snapping him the ball and then also running the routes. Mahomes is throwing to Kelce, Shedeur is throwing to equipment guys.”

The starting quarterback situation in Cleveland remains unclear. Many believe veteran Joe Flacco will lead the depth chart, followed by rookie Dillon Gabriel. But some voices in the media believe Sanders should be getting serious consideration to start.

“Guys, Shedeur Sanders,” ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum said on Get Up. “This is a no-brainer. I want you to take some copious notes here. Since 2000, there’s only been six quarterbacks start a game under six feet tall. That’s Russell Wilson, Kyler Murray, Bryce Young, PJ Walker, Seneca Wallace, and Doug Flutie. Exactly. So, to me, even though Dillon Gabriel went in the third round, I would start Shedeur Sanders. Let them fight it out on the field, but to me, Shedeur Sanders has the better pro body and more upside.”

Sanders has flashed potential during limited opportunities at Browns training camp, and he may be in line for more reps after Kenny Pickett suffered a hamstring injury. As preseason approaches, the former Colorado Buffaloes standout will have to make the most of any snaps he gets to prove he belongs.
