England international shares primary reason to leave Liverpool

Liverpool have had a topsy turvy start to the 2025/26 season as they won the first five games in the Premier League before suffering three consecutive defeats in the buildup to the international break.

Despite a flying start, the Reds have suffered sudden dip in form as they looked a little jaded in the last few games.

While their attack lacked that extra zing, the Reds are also shorthanded in defense with Giovanni Leoni's ACL injury and regular starter Ibrahima Konate running out his current contract.

Therefore, they are missing depth in the centre-back areas especially after they missed out of signing Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guehi.

While they have Joe Gomez and Wataru Endo, perfectly capable of playing centre-backs, many fans are missing academy star Jarell Quansah who was offloaded to Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

Liverpool sold the 22-year-old homegrown English defender for £35m ($47m) transfer fee this summer which improved their PSR situation and allowed them to invest more money on their summer transfers.

Considering his performances for the Bundesliga outfit since then, the Reds may have second thoughts about the youngster moving away from Anfield.

Quansah, who is now focused on featuring for England in next year's World Cup after getting a callup to the side by Thomas Tuchel, shared his decision to quit Liverpool.

"I have been learning from some of the best players around me at the time at Liverpool," Quansah told reporters before England's friendly against Wales on Friday.

"Being able to do that has been so good for my career. It has always been a big part of it. At this part of my career, 22 turning 23, [in January] I need hundreds of games to be where I want to be.

"I think overall that's why the decision was made and why I thought going abroad was best for me."

What did Quansah say about making his England debut?

Quansah was part of the England team that won the Euros U21 this year and he was one of the protagonists for the Young Lions.

Despite the tension at Leverkusen with Erik ten Hag's sacking, Quansah has been pretty decent for the Bundesliga outfit and therefore he has been called up to the England senior team by Tuchel.

However, the young centre-back has received five call-ups earlier by former England bosses - Gareth Southgate, interim manager Lee Carsley and now Tuchel.

Surprisingly, he is yet to make his England debut, and it is something that must be on the back of his mind, but he feels getting regular call-ups is also a matter of honour for him.

"It is not a strange feeling, I'm really delighted to be here," Quansah added.

"[It is] always a huge honour to get called up and I'm thankful for the manager for that as well. It is always about learning from the senior players who have more caps than I do.

"Hopefully it is something I will achieve, a cap for England."

England will host Wales on a friendly on Thursday at Wembley Stadium before hitting the road to Latvia for a World Cup qualifier next Tuesday.
