Emmys 2025: Sheryl Lee Ralph Reveals Secret to Her 20-Year Marriage
Sheryl Lee Ralph is letting fans in on a little secret.
As the Abbott Elementary star stepped out at the Emmys 2025 at the Peacock Theater, where she is nominated for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, she had a simple explanation for what keeps her and husband Vincent Hughes so happy after 20 years together.
“Communication,” Sheryl told Zuri Hall during Live From E!: 2025 Emmys red carpet Sept. 14. “I tell everybody, try not to go to sleep with anger on your heart, to try to talk it out with each other because nine times out of ten, you’re both worth it.” (See every star on the Emmys 2025 red carpet.)
Of course, Sheryl—who is nominated alongside The Bear’s Liza Colon Zayas, Hacks’ Hannah Einbinder, The Studio’s Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara, Shrinking’s Jessica Williams and her Abbott Elementary costar Janelle James—also admitted she has a leg up in how much affection she has for the Pennsylvania State Senator. “I’m married to someone that I don’t only love, but I like him, too, which makes it so much easier when I get angry to remember, ‘Oh, I like this person,’” she explained. “The love is always there, but the liking sometimes, that can be a challenge. But I like him.”
As for how Sheryl has been nominated for the third time for her Abbott Elementary role? She admits a large part of it is thanks to the mind of creator and fellow star Quinta Brunson.

“Quinta has been so excellent about the writing, the timing, the planning of this show that I choose to just lean in with her,” she gushed. “I’m like, ‘Quinta you do your thing, baby,’ because the first time out, I won that Emmy and every year later, I’ve been nominated for that Emmy so she must be doing something right.”
