Emmy Nominations 2025: Beyoncé and Jay-Z Face Off in Same Category
Beyoncé and Jay-Z may have a slight family feud.
After all, Mrs. and Mr. Carter each snagged a nomination for the 2025 Emmys in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category July 15.
For her part, Beyoncé is nominated for her Netflix NFL Halftime show Beyoncé Bowl, while Jay-Z—alongside Dave Free—snagged a nomination as an executive producer for the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar. Other contenders in the stacked category include The Oscars, SNL50: The Anniversary Special and SNL50: The Homecoming Concert.
Jay-Z previously took home the award in the category in 2022 for his work on the Apple Music Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick, and 50 Cent.
Beyoncé and Jay-Z—who have been married since 2008—will have to wait until September to see who comes out on top. However, the duo are no strangers to sharing historic moments during awards season.
In November, the “16 Carriages” singer tied the “99 Problems” rapper as the most nominated artist at the Grammys when she received nine nominations for Cowboy Carter, bringing her total to 88.
Just a few months later, Beyoncé—who shares kids Blue, 13, and twins Rumi and Sir, 8, with Jay-Z—surpassed her husband as she made history as the most awarded musician with 35 total wins during the February ceremony.

And when it comes to his wife’s awards season track record, Jay-Z has no problem standing up for her. Prior to winning the Album of the Year Grammy for Cowboy Carter, Beyoncé lost out on the category five times, prompting her husband to publicly call out the Recording Academy.
"We want y'all to get it right—at least get it close to right," Jay-Z said onstage at the 2024 Grammy Awards as he accepted the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. "Obviously it's subjective, because it's music and it's opinion based. But some things, you know, I don't want to embarrass this young lady—but she has more Grammys than everyone and never won Album of the Year."
"So, even by your own metrics that doesn't work," he added. "Think about that: The most Grammys, never won Album of the Year. That doesn't work."
And while Jay-Z or Beyoncé has yet to publicly react to the nomination, Roc Nation celebrated the halftime show and Kendrick’s accolades.
“FOUR 2025 EMMY NOMINATIONS,” the July 15 Instagram post read. “Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show Starring Kendrick Lamar Outstanding Variety Special (Live), Outstanding Directing For a Variety Special, Outstanding Music Direction, Choreography (Variety/Reality).”
