The son of an NFL legend is headed to the Chiefs Kingdom.

E.J. Smith, the son of football Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith, was signed by Kansas City as an undrafted free agent after not hearing his name called during this past weekend’s draft.

Smith loudly celebrated after receiving a call from the Chiefs about his signing, according to a video posted on his social media on Sunday.

“Celebrate with your family, you’re a Chief,” a voice on the phone tells Smith as he smiles widely.

“Yeah, I’m 100 percent healthy, I’m ready to go,” Smith says in another part of the video while talking on the phone. “I appreciate you, coach.”

“Excited to officially sign with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent,” Smith wrote on Instagram as the caption. “Nothing is given. Everything is earned. I’m ready to work, learn, and prove myself every single day. Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and everyone who believed in me and pushed me to this moment. The journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge prepared me for this next step. Grateful is an understatement. All glory to God for this opportunity. Let’s get it Chiefs Kingdom.”

Smith played his final two seasons of college ball at Texas A&M after four at Stanford.

He had 44 carries for 205 yards and four touchdowns in 2025 with the Aggies, while adding four catches for 18 yards.

During the course of his college career, Smith had 207 rushing attempts for 969 yards and nine touchdowns.

Smith also recorded 470 receiving yards and a touchdown.

While the younger Smith won’t get a chance to wear a Cowboys jersey out of the gate like his three-time Super Bowl-winning old man, there is still a connection to Dallas.

Kansas City’s running backs coach is former Cowboys running back and franchise single-season rushing record holder DeMarco Murray.
