Emma Roberts Explains Why She Wore Black During Wedding to Cody John

Eric Roberts Speaks Out After Missing Daughter Emma Roberts’ Wedding

Emma Roberts was in her monochromatic bridal era.

While the Scream Queens actress wore a slightly off-white wedding gown designed by Monique Lhuillier to marry Cody John at an outdoor ceremony in Idaho on July 25, she wanted something completely different for the nuptials’ after-party.

Enter Roberts’ second dress of the night: a black, two-piece archival number from Lhuillier’s Fall 2004 collection.

“I love the idea of wearing black for the after-party,” Roberts shared in an interview with Vogue published July 26. “We love doing something that’s a little unexpected.”

The 35-year-old’s after-party dress featured a black corset top in Chantilly lace with a tea-length skirt, hand-cut and made from layered silk organza.

“This looks like it could be totally vintage from 100 years ago, or from now,” Roberts mused, calling the look “so fun.”

The vintage vibe was also an aspect Roberts wanted to bring to her actual wedding dress.

“I’m obsessed with antique books and treasure hunting, and I love collecting old ephemera,” she told Vogue, “so I really wanted that to shine through in the dress.”

In fact, that’s the reason why Roberts’ wedding dress wasn’t white, but rather a custom fabric color with a white tea-stained effect that the designer dubbed “Vintage Rose” in honor of the American Horror Story actress’ middle name.

“I kind of wanted to look like a ghost,” Roberts explained, “a little antique ghost doll.”

Created with 25 yards of custom fabric, the wedding gown featured an asymmetrical neckline and removable shawl, allowing the dress to be worn strapless as well. Lhuillier also created a chapel-length veil with a lace voilette that covered Roberts’ eyes, but could be pushed back to look like a lace headband.

When Roberts first tried on the dress, she was stunned, saying, “I feel like an elfin fairy.”

And the Madame Web actress—who shares son Rhodes, 5, with ex Garrett Hedlund—wasn’t the only one to opt for a slightly less traditional look, as husband John donned a chocolate brown suit.
