Eagles' star highlights offensive changes under Sean Mannion

One of the bigger talking points that surrounded the Philadelphia Eagles last season was their stagnant offense, with the then-reigning Super Bowl champions trailing behind league averages in several offensive categories, most notably total yards and yards per game. Given that it was in sharp contrast to where the Eagles were in the previous campaign, something had to change.

That change would come shortly after Philadelphia was eliminated in the Wild Card round by the San Francisco 49ers, with their offensive coordinator, Kevin Patullo, being removed from his position in the Coaches' booth.

From there, the Eagles' front office would be on a manhunt to find someone to fill the shoes left by Patullo, which led them to Sean Mannion, who was part of the Green Bay Packers' quarterback coaching department. Since the hiring, Mannion has been hard at work finding schemes that could work for his new team, and according to a recent interview, one of his offensive talents is a fan of the changes.

During Philadelphia's training camp on Thursday afternoon, Eagles' tight end Dallas Goedert talked about some of the alterations that Mannion is enforcing, with one of them being suited towards his offensive teammate, DeVonta Smith, as well as just upping the pace of play.

"There's a lot more new stuff than we've ever had before," stated Goedert. "There's certain things that Smitty [Smith] does well that we're going to let him do, we're going to find ways to get touches that way... I think the coach has been really good at implementing new stuff, but also try to get it to us so that we can play fast and play free..."

Finding ways to get more opportunities for Smith could be a worthy solution for Mannion, as the 27-year-old was one of the bright sides of Philadelphia's offense last season, recording 1008 yards and four receiving touchdowns throughout the campaign. Smith was also one of the players to get the ball to in tough situations, getting a fresh set of downs on 44 separate occasions.

It's also worth noting that, with A.J. Brown having departed the team via trade to the New England Patriots, Smith would presumably become the Eagles' number one option in their receiving core, joined by rookie Makai Lemon and offseason acquisition Dontayvion Wicks.

While the Eagles are in training camp for the time being, Mannion will have an opportunity to showcase what he's been working on in the offseason throughout his team's preseason slate, with their first match coming on August 15 against the Baltimore Ravens.
