Eagles reportedly lose out on ascending young QB who requested trade to Cowboys

The Philadelphia Eagles have made moves within their quarterback room this offseason, most notably trading 2024 backup Kenny Pickett to the Browns, acquiring former fifth-round pick Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and promoting Tanner McKee to QB2.

The Eagles are reportedly not done making changes on the depth chart behind reigning Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts.

Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz of FOX Sports, the Eagles were among a number of teams who were in on New England Patriots quarterback Joe Milton, a 2024 sixth-round pick whose value has been on the rise this offseason. Schultz reported that the Patriots turned down better offers in ultimately trading Milton to the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday:

My understanding is since Joe Milton became available at the start of the offseason, teams that showed interest included the Raiders, Eagles, Giants, Steelers and the Cowboys.

The Cowboys sent a fifth-round pick to the Patriots in exchange for Milton and a seventh-rounder. Philly’s NFC East rival had a need at backup quarterback after opting not to re-sign Cooper Rush or Trey Lance this offseason.

The Eagles’ reported interest in Milton is intriguing. It’s possible Philly could look to cash in on their own ascending quarterback asset, McKee, who played with the poise and consistency of a starter when given the opportunity due to injuries in 2024. Given the number of NFL teams currently playing musical chairs at the QB position, it’s easy to see McKee being coveted, especially if he balls out in the preseason.

Anything’s possible on that front, but it would likely take a sizable offer for Philly to move on from McKee. The player likely on the chopping block here is Thompson-Robinson, who struggled mightily in Cleveland and feels like a long-shot to make the roster if Howie Roseman and Co. are really checking in on quarterback prospects on the trade market.

The Eagles currently hold four fifth-round picks for the 2025 NFL Draft, so they could have beaten Dallas’ offer without batting an eye, potentially packaging one of those picks with a Day 3 pick in 2026. Training camp would have been must-see TV this summer for the defending Super Bowl champs with Hurts, McKee and Milton in the mix, but it will now be interesting to see if Roseman continues to retool his QB depth chart during or after the draft.
