NFL rosters are always in flux the month before training camp begins, with teams allotted 90 total spots until the end of the preseason (not including exemptions).
The Philadelphia Eagles have spent the past couple of weeks tweaking the edges of their 90-man roster after Brandon Graham’s retirement was officially processed on June 1, and Bryce Huff was traded to San Francisco days later. For example, Philly signed undrafted rookie wide receiver Ife Adeyi last week before waiving him two days later.
While the prospects of superstar cornerback Jaire Alexander landing with Philly is intriguing, with Monday’s news that the Green Bay Packers are preparing to release the two-time All-Pro, adding another EDGE to replace Huff and help fill the void left by Josh Sweat makes a lot more sense for Vic Fangio’s defense at this stage of the offseason.
Eagles insider Anthony DiBona of The Philly Special Show predicts GM Howie Roseman and company could target ascending Baltimore Ravens pass rusher Odafe Oweh if he fails to land a contact extension from his current squad this year.
“Oweh is from New Jersey and would certainly make sense as a trade target for the Eagles if he became available,” DiBona wrote. “He fits the Howie Roseman mold as a former high draft pick that hasn’t exactly found consistent success with the team that originally drafted him.”
Oweh, a former first-round pick, prepped for his upcoming contact year by adding about 20 pounds over the winter. He won mostly behind his speed in 2024, when he racked up a career-high 10 sacks, and he could be poised to take another leap forward this season with added size and power.
It’s worth noting that the Ravens did invest in Oweh last spring by picking up his fifth-year option. That means he’ll make a fully guaranteed $13.2 million in 2025. That could complicate efforts to trade for the former Penn State star, as any money left on Oweh’s contract would count against this year’s salary cap.
Roseman did create a sizable amount of cap space this month after the team’s designated releases of Darius Slay Jr. and James Bradberry processed after June 1, along with some modest savings from the Huff deal.
With over $30 million in available cap space, and a fully-stocked cupboard of 13 selections in the 2026 NFL draft, the Eagles could swing a trade for Oweh without batting an eye. But Oweh’s second contract is coming, either from the Ravens in the form of an extension, or by a multi-year deal from his next team.
The roster need is obvious, but do the Eagles like Oweh enough to extend him at a number similar to what they gave Huff in 2024? If the answer to that question is anything but a definitive yes, it’s hard to see Philly making a big move for a player who could potentially hit free agency in 2026.
