Eagles could look to trade struggling $51M pass rusher this offseason, per NFL insider

Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman hit a pair of home runs during the 2024 free agency period. Linebacker Zack Baun and right guard Mekhi Becton have massively outplayed the one-year contracts they signed with the team and should be extended as soon as possible.

Roseman also had what looks to be a pair of ugly misses back in March.

Devin White, handed $3.5 million guaranteed to presumably start at inside linebacker, was released this season before he was even active for a game.

Bryce Huff, lured away from the New York Jets for $51.1 million over three years, has been a major letdown, playing less than 40% of the defensive snaps this season; he has just 2.5 sacks and 10 total tackles through his first 10 games with the Eagles.

Similar to the White situation, NFL insider Dan Graziano of ESPN believes the Eagles will move on from Huff in short order. It’s just a bit more complicated due to Huff’s bloated salary in 2025.

That makes a trade much more likely than a flat-out release. Here was Graziano’s take on a potential move:

"What? Didn't he just sign there? Yes, Huff was a high-profile free agent signing by the Eagles, who gave him a three-year, $51.1 million deal to lure him away from the Jets. Given the way the season has unfolded, Huff is certainly happy with that move. But are the Eagles happy with him? Huff played just 12% of their defensive snaps in Week 9, 20% in Week 10 and 22% in Week 11 (after averaging 44% over the first eight weeks). He has 2.5 sacks, 14 pressures and four quarterback hits, and he seems to be a lesser part of the pass-rush rotation than the Eagles hoped he would be when they signed him. Now, he also has $16.75 million in guaranteed money coming in 2025, so the Eagles aren't likely to cut him. Instead, he's on here because, at age 26, he could be an appealing trade target for a team looking for edge rush help that thinks he'd fit better with them than he does in Philly.” — Graziano

Huff’s role has declined in recent weeks, but in his defense, he’s battling a wrist injury. He had his hand wrapped up like a club during Thursday night’s game against the Washington Commanders, which is why he played only 14 defensive snaps.

That’s not to excuse Huff’s complete lack of impact prior to the injury. He has massively underperformed, to the point where defensive coordinator Vic Fangio deploys him mostly in clear pass rushing situations. That’s not a role that earns a player $17 million per season.

If Roseman and the Eagles can clear even a decent chunk of that guaranteed money due in 2025, they would likely take it and cut bait if they can find a trade partner this offseason.
