After defeating the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in the semifinals Saturday night, the San Antonio Spurs seemed destined to hoist the NBA Cup.
Things started off strong for the Spurs, as they held a five point lead through the first three quarters. Unfortunately, the Knicks blew the game open in the final frame, outscoring San Antonio 35-19 en route to an 11 point victory.
Although San Antonio finished with seven players in double-figures, they were unable to keep up with Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby who combined for 53 points. Additionally, New York dominated San Antonio on the glass, finishing the game with 17 more rebounds.
Rookie Dylan Harper was most impressive for San Antonio in the defeat, leading the team in scoring with 21 points off the bench. Harper did so on sharp shooting from deep, as he finished 5-for-7 from long range.
After the game, Harper spoke about what he learned in the first high stakes games of his young career. “You’ve seen the level of intensity rise up for us and them. Obviously, they came out with the win. But for us, it’s not taking anything for granted; I think that’s the biggest thing. When we all go out there, we all know that we’ve got to play 110% in order to win things like this.”
Although San Antonio suffered defeat, they remain one of the strongest teams in the Western Conference and appear to be poised for a deep playoff run.
The Spurs return to action Thursday, facing the Washington Wizards at home.
