Dylan Harper breaks multiple NBA Finals rookie records and then delivers a calm ‘long game’ warning

The San Antonio Spurs Dylan Harper played phenomenally in Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks on Wednesday. Though the Spurs couldn’t win the game, Harper gave his best, and he also remains hopeful for the upcoming games.

“Sometimes it doesn’t go your way,” Harper said in his post game conference. “For us, it’s more about playing the long game and just being consistent in our habits. I think that's the biggest part. I feel like if we just stay consistent, everything's going to work out.”

Harper finished with 16 points and 8 rebounds, leading the Spurs in scoring through the first three quarters before seeing limited action in the fourth, playing just 3:33. His 10-point first quarter marked the highest scoring output by a rookie in a Finals Game 1 quarter in the play-by-play era (since 1998). The record previously stood at four points, set by Jordan Bell of the Golden State Warriors in 2018, according to ESPN Research.

Harper also passed David Robinson’s 243-point mark to set a new Spurs rookie record for most points in a single postseason. Additionally, he became the first Western Conference rookie since Magic Johnson in 1980 to record at least 250 points and 100 rebounds in a single playoff run.

Harper's showing also proved his rising role in San Antonio’s championship push. Given his impact and consistency, some are already calling for him to be inserted into the starting lineup. In a Finals setting, there’s little room for patience, and so, adjustments may need to come quickly ahead of Game 2.
