Dusty May is excited to be working with Kyrie Irving after seeing him in a workout

Dusty May is now coaching the Dallas Mavericks after a national championship with Michigan. He has made the leap to the NBA, where he will be coaching some of the league's most impressive young players like Cooper Flagg.

However, the standout player for May so far has been the veteran guard, Kyrie Irving. It seems the one-time champion could be a big deal in May's system, given he already saw Irving working out.

Kyrie Irving is quickly earning Dusty May's respect

The Mavericks will benefit from having Irving back because he is still a tremendously talented offensive player. He is a go-to guy, as he is skilled with his scoring, but he is also quite efficient.

Flagg is the star player for the future, but he still needs to develop properly. That means more opportunities will come to the older players like Irving and Klay Thompson.

The Mavericks are a bit of an unknown quantity ahead of the 2026-27 season. However, getting May as the head coach proves that they are ready to be ambitious. Irving's return could be the boost they need to do so.

"I spoke with Kyrie and actually witnessed a workout this morning, and I felt like I left the gym watching Picasso paint a picture," May said about Irving on NBA Today.

If the Mavericks can pull off surprises in the 2026-27 season, Irving will play a big part. They are a much better team than most people realize, and Irving can showcase his premium quality yet again.
