Duke’s Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel doing something not seen since Kevin Durant at Texas

Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel form one of the best freshman duos in the history of college basketball, and that's before even mentioning Duke's other standout freshman, Khaman Maluach.

It's clear every time the Blue Devils play how good Flagg and Knueppel are, but the numbers back it up, too.

Take this new stat from CBS Sports writer Matt Norlander:

"Kon and Cooper are averaging a combined 33+ points, 11+ (rebounds), 7+ (assists), 39% from 3. The last time a frosh duo did this: Kevin Durant and D.J. Augustin at Texas."

That Durant-Augustin season at Texas was 2006-07, so it's been almost two decades.

Durant was National Player of the Year in his lone Longhorns season, and Flagg has won multiple NPOY awards this season, too.

Durant's freshman season numbers are crazy: 25.8 points, 11.1 rebounds, 1.9 blocks per game on 40.4 percent from 3.

Flagg's freshman numbers have their own historic levels: 18.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, 1.3 blocks per game.

Knueppel, like Augustin, is the perfect best man.

Duke is hoping, unlike that Texas team, that it can be the last team standing.
