New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has revealed his trust in wide receiver Stefon Diggs is long-held, going back before his NFL career. Both players were heavily involved in the Patriots’ 27-14 win against the New York Jets on Thursday.

While Maye completed 25 of 34 passes for 281 yards and a touchdown, Diggs led the Patriots in receptions with nine catches for 105 yards. It needs no telling that the connection between the two is one of the most potent ingredients in the Patriots’ offensive recipe this season.

The quarterback was asked after the game how he built the trust relationship with Diggs. He responded:

“No, that trust was built up probably when I was in middle school, when he was playing in the league; it was long ago. You know, guys like him and Hunter and Mack—you trust those guys for what they’ve done in this league…”

Maye’s consistent performance for the Patriots this season has led to several fans and analysts hyping him up for the MVP award this year. With the second-year quarterback under center, the Patriots have won eight straight games this season, sitting atop the AFC East with a 9-2 record.

New England hasn’t had a streak this long since the Tom Brady era, prompting comparisons between the NFL legend and the North Carolina alum.

Drake Maye’s rise should come as no surprise to many, especially Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, who said he influenced his coming to New England. He said on a postgame show on Thursday:

“I came here because of the familiarity. I came here because of Drake. I knew what he would be, and it was important for me to come here. And that’s someone I wanted to coach. And so, building a program is about that. It’s about putting great people around your really good players. That’s what Drake is for us.”

Drake Maye deflects MVP chants

The chants for Drake Maye to be named MVP are getting louder. The quarterback is trying not to let it get to him, denying that the chants were meant for him when questioned by the media. He said following Thursday’s win over the Jets:

“Those may have been for TreVeyon tonight. I mean, he scored three touchdowns. Our fans have been great with me since I got here.”

Maye and the Patriots will be looking to extend their streak when they face the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 23.
