DoorDash shut-down during NYC blizzard prompts this reaction from tough NYers

Shade is on the menu.

The food-delivery app DoorDash extended its blizzard-related shutdown in New York City till Monday afternoon – and New Yorkers didn’t miss a beat throwing shade at those who seemingly can’t live without snow-day take-away:

“And just like that, the 35% of tech workers who cannot feed themselves without delivery apps in NYC are finally going to die,” a person quipped online.

Another commenter wrote, “Praying for the ppl i know in nyc who have zero cooking skills and for whom doordash being closed is akin to a death sentence.”

Someone else added, “DoorDash said they canceled today in the tri state area so cook you lazy people.”

But not all were quick to take jabs at “lazy” Doordash users:

“People need to understand that doordash is not just for “lazy” people. It is for disabled people who are unable to go out to get food,” a user wrote.

Other similar apps such as Uber Eats and Instacart appeared to be up and running Sunday night and still were in operation Monday.

The DoorDash shutdown was first issued Sunday at 8:30 p.m., 30 minutes before the city’s travel ban was set to take effect.

Though the ban was lifted Monday at noon, DoorDash’s suspension remains in effect until “at least” 2 p.m. “depending on conditions,” the service later said.

It was still down at 2:30 p.m. but up by 4:30 p.m.

“New York City is bracing itself ahead of a historic blizzard — the first in nearly a decade — with a foot of snow or more and dangerous wind gusts expected,” Doordash rep Julian Crowley said in its Sunday announcement.

“We’re suspending operations early to keep Dashers safe and off the streets before the travel ban takes effect. We’re closely monitoring conditions and will resume as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
