The Cleveland Cavaliers made few major moves in the 2026 offseason, but their trade for Peyton Watson could be a game-changer. He is the wing player they have needed for a while, and he's been a big hit with his new teammates.
As he comes from the Denver Nuggets, Watson knows what it's like to play in a winning culture. He is bringing that success with him to the Cavaliers, as he hopes to help the team compete for a championship in the suddenly stacked Eastern Conference.
Peyton Watson is getting rave reviews from Donovan Mitchell
Watson is the type of modern wing player that every team would love to have. He is a positive on offense, but he does not need the ball often to make an impact. With smart cuts to the rim, playing in the dunker spot, or setting timely screens, Watson is a great fit alongside ball-dominant players like Mitchell and James Harden.
At the same time, Watson is also a rock-solid defender. Considering that the Cavaliers need more support for their lackluster defense in the backcourt, Watson can cover up a lot of their issues on that end. He will provide Evan Mobley with solid support by taking the hardest perimeter matchups, so Mobley and Jarrett Allen can roam freely as help defenders at the rim.

With his physical traits, Watson has stood out for the Cavaliers and the Nuggets. However, Mitchell is a big fan of the mindset that Watson is bringing over from his Nuggets days.
"The biggest thing is that he’s a winner. Just the fact that he can compete out there on the defensive end. We know how athletic he is. We saw what he did when Joker was out last year. He brings that, which is new for us. His mindset, IQ, and defense is a big addition," Mitchell said during a mid-game interview during a matchup against the Orlando Magic in preseason.
Watson has cemented his place in the Cavaliers rotation because his new teammates love playing alongside him. At the same time, he is just a seamless fit in head coach Kenny Atkinson's system. Many people questioned him leaving the Nuggets, but it seems he has made the right decision with the opportunities he is getting.
