The Miami Dolphins were busy on Monday, with the team reportedly notifying four players of their release.
Those four players are wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, edge rusher Bradley Chubb and guard James Daniels, and none of them were a surprise.
As of Tuesday morning, the releases of Hill, Westbrook-Ikhine and Daniels have been made official by the Dolphins. It remains to be seen why Chubb's hasn't been made official yet, but we know he's definitely out after posting a farewell message.
So, for now, Over The Cap has only factored in the cuts of Hill, Westbrook-Ikhine and Daniels for the Dolphins' cap space projection, and with those three off the books, the Dolphins are now sitting with $3.1 million in cap space, up from the $17 million over Miami was beforehand.
Thanks to a little quick math, we can estimate what the Dolphins will have in cap space following a Chubb cut.
If done before June 1, cutting Chubb would open up $7.3 million in cap space, which will put Miami over $10 million in available funds.
A post-June 1 cut would open up another $20.2 million in cap space, giving Miami over $23 million to work with. However, the Dolphins would not be able to use the addition $20.2 million in cap space until after that date.
That isn't necessarily an issue for the Dolphins, who don't figure to be too aggressive in free agency given the team's need to rebuild and get its financial house in order.
We could see the Dolphins going either way with a Chubb cut. What isn't debatable is the fact that Chubb's time in Miami is over.
Now, we turn our attention to the next offseason domino, which is quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who could be the next high-profile cut for Miami if the team can't find a trade partner.
