Dolphins sign former Cowboys, Jets 1st-round bust defensive lineman

The Miami Dolphins have been very busy since all 53-man rosters were finalized. They went out and claimed seven players on waivers and have been adding a lot of free-agent talent to their practice squad and depth chart.

Pretty much the entire roster could use some help, that is, besides the running back and center positions. All their other positions could benefit from a few upgrades. So, it should come as no surprise that they added an interior defensive lineman on Tuesday.

Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team shared on Twitter/x that the Dolphins have signed free agent and former first-round bust defensive tackle of the Dallas Cowboys and New York Jets, Mazi Smith, to a contract this September.

"The Dolphins have signed former Cowboys 1st-round DT Mazi Smith to their practice squad," Meirov shared. "Smith was recently released by the Jets but will stay in the AFC East."

The addition of Smith to the practice squad should not come as a huge surprise for any Dolphins fans, as any help they can get who could get an opportunity at the NFL level right away is a good pickup for Miami.

Smith, the 25-year-old defensive tackle selected at no. 26 overall by the Cowboys back in 2023, is a true bust. He's not played well in his three NFL seasons since being selected, both with the Cowboys and the Jets.

He was traded last season in the Quinnen Williams trade, but he only played in eight total games last season, recording no sacks and just three total tackles.

In 42 NFL games in his career, including 17 starts in 2024, Smith has just 2.0 total sacks with 57 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and six quarterback hits.

He is only going to be depth for the Dolphins and might not even see the NFL roster. But his former first-round pedigree is enough of a reason to give him a chance to come off the practice squad. He is still only 25 years old, after all.
