Dolphins predicted to sign former $20M first-rounder seeking career resurgence to aid secondary

The Miami Dolphins are in some very dangerous territory—and the preseason hasn’t even started yet. Their secondary is already full of question marks, as the team has suffered a significant number of injuries. On Tuesday, Ashtyn Davis went down with what appears to be a serious injury.

“Got another injury in the secondary ... this time it's safety Ashtyn Davis, who stayed down after an 11-on-11 snap. Hobbled to the sideline clearly favoring his left leg. Mike McDaniel and Anthony Weaver went over to see him,” Sports Illustrated’s Alain Poupart wrote.

The injury bug isn’t helping head coach Mike McDaniel’s case. McDaniel is in a prove-it season, and it’s hard to prove anything when the secondary is nearly depleted.

“All of those now put a tremendous amount of pressure on McDaniel, who is coming off his first under .500 season with the Dolphins, who were also on the outside looking in on the playoffs. We already listed McDaniel as a head coach with one of the hottest seats in the NFL entering 2025, and the road to save his job just got even more difficult,” CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan wrote.

Last weekend, the Dolphins signed two veteran cornerbacks, hoping they can make some impact. However, another move may be necessary. Sports Illustrated’s Dante Collinelli believes Miami might be so desperate that they could sign CJ Henderson, who hasn’t played significant time in several years.

“It’s pretty telling that Henderson, a former first-round pick of the Jaguars, couldn’t beat out a player like Armstrong, who hadn’t played since 2022. However, desperate times call for desperate measures,” Collinelli wrote. “The last time Henderson saw significant action was in 2019 with the Panthers. He played in 12 games (seven starts), recording zero interceptions, two pass breakups, and a passer rating allowed of 106.8.”

Henderson isn’t the most promising option at cornerback, but with injuries piling up, the Dolphins simply need numbers. Hopefully, the team can stay somewhat healthy in the secondary during training camp and the season. While a career resurgence for Henderson is possible, it seems unlikely.
