The Miami Dolphins are in an interesting position heading into this season. They’re not well-positioned to win now after trading away some key weapons, they don’t have the cap space to sign impactful players, and things could be trending downward—with head coach Mike McDaniel firmly on the hot seat.
“All of those now put a tremendous amount of pressure on McDaniel, who is coming off his first under .500 season with the Dolphins, who were also on the outside looking in on the playoffs. We already listed McDaniel as a head coach with one of the hottest seats in the NFL entering 2025, and the road to save his job just got even more difficult,” CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan wrote.
The Dolphins are working to clear cap space, but it’s not helping McDaniel’s case. The players with the most expensive contracts are the team’s veterans. Pro Football Network’s Jacob Infante even predicts that the Dolphins could make a shocking move by cutting Tyreek Hill.
“For the record, Tyreek Hill makes much more sense as a trade option. Not only would a player of his caliber reel in solid value in a trade, but the Miami Dolphins would save over $20 million more trading him rather than releasing him,” Infante wrote.
Hill is entering this season with a completely new mindset—very different from a year ago, when it seemed like he might not return to Miami.
“Hill is down 14 pounds (from 197 to 183) to a more comfortable weight as he once again sets his eyes on 2,000 yards receiving for the season,” CBS Sports’ Jordan Dajani wrote.

There’s no doubt the Dolphins would benefit financially from moving on from Hill’s contract. However, releasing him would send a clear message to McDaniel and the rest of the team: Miami is heading full speed into rebuild mode.
