The Miami Dolphins appear to be unraveling heading into the season. Their head coach is reportedly on the hot seat, injuries are piling up fast, and public confidence in the team is fading. At the center of it all could be a lingering issue: a toxic culture that still hasn't been addressed.
“Except this isn't a one-year issue with Miami. Set aside the iffy football decisions, like Grier's inability to field a stable offensive line or properly manage high-profile salaries over the course of a nine-year tenure featuring exactly zero playoff victories. Just from a culture perspective, Miami has been the NFL equivalent of an accident -- a controversy, a feud, a drama -- waiting to happen,” CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin wrote.
Head coach Mike McDaniel is under pressure, criticized for being too friendly of a leader. If the results don’t turn around soon, many believe his time in Miami will end after this season.
More bad news came on Tuesday, when second-string safety Ashtyn Davis suffered an injury that appeared to be serious.
“Miami Dolphins safety Ashtyn Davis left today’s training camp practice after going down with an injury during 11-on-11 work. Davis walked off the field gingerly, favoring his left leg. He returned to the field soon after using crutches and wearing a boot around his left foot,” Sports Illustrated’s Dante Collinelli reported.
The Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson provided more context on the state of the safety room following Davis’ injury:

“With Ashtyn Davis on crutches and wearing a boot, Dolphins now without No. 2 safety and No. 3 safety, though Iffy hasn't been portrayed as longterm injury. Trader remains out at least another week. So Elijah Campbell, McMorris, John Saunders Jr. behind Minkah at safety,” Jackson wrote.
Recently acquired Minkah Fitzpatrick will now be expected to take on an even heavier workload if his backups remain sidelined. For the remaining safeties still fighting for roster spots, this stretch of camp becomes a critical opportunity to prove themselves.
The injury to Davis is a significant blow to a team already battling poor momentum, mounting health concerns, and a locker room culture that continues to draw scrutiny.
