Dolphins' DC Anthony Weaver reveals key reason behind Jalen Ramsey exploring trade

Miami is going to be one of the NFL’s most unpredictable teams heading into the season, especially with several veterans potentially off the roster by Week 1. However, the Dolphins seem to have a clear idea of their direction—they're just playing it smart.

Jalen Ramsey is almost certainly going to be traded; it's just a matter of time. The main holdup appears to be the Dolphins’ unwillingness to absorb any of his cap hit, which has made negotiations difficult.

“The Dolphins appear unwilling to take on any of Jalen Ramsey’s guaranteed money to facilitate a trade. Teams are very interested in trading for Ramsey, but don’t want to take on his full contract. This is the current hold up,” Jeremy Fowler reported.

Another reason a deal hasn’t happened yet is financial: Miami could save nearly $20 million by waiting until after June 1st to make the move.

“ESPN's Adam Schefter reports ‘there's more interest in Jalen Ramsey than people realize.’ Trade could be announced in June, potentially. Schefter notes if trade happens before, it wouldn't be processed until after June 1 for cap reasons,” Barry Jackson posted.

The underlying issue, though, may be the relationship—or lack thereof—between Ramsey and the team. It appears things simply didn’t click.

“I talked with their defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver about the situation and his quote kind of why the Dolphins’ and Ramsey’s are here. He said Ramsey has been a great player for us, but relationships are hard and he has chosen to move on,” Cameron Wolfe said.

It’s long been expected that Ramsey will be traded at some point, but the role of strained relationships hadn’t been publicly known until now. Wherever he lands next, it will be interesting to see how those relationships take shape moving forward.
