The more I think about it, the less I think it makes sense for the Los Angeles Dodgers to go after Tarik Skubal.
The idea of Skubal being on the roster definitely makes sense, and if the Dodgers trade for him, I don't think it should be viewed as a surprise or a bad thing, as doing whatever they can to ensure they go back-to-back-to-back should be at the top of their priority list.
However, with the Dodgers having an above-average farm system, a very expensive roster, and a chance to win this year and for the next decade or so if things go as planned, at least with this current roster, it might be better to just give Skubal the money he's looking for in the offseason rather than trading for him and moving prospects now.
I can see why the Dodgers would go after him now if they don't want to sign him in free agency, but I think the same goes for the other side. Regardless, the Dodgers might go with a cheaper and older option when they don't have to worry about signing him in the future. That player would be Sonny Gray, with him recently predicted to end up in Los Angeles.
“You couldn’t have a list of trade candidates without the Los Angeles Dodgers as a team in the mix. The Dodgers have been hit with some untimely injuries to their pitching staff, so adding a short-term fix isn’t a terrible idea. That’s what Sonny Gray is for the Dodgers’ pitching depth problem.
Gray has been on a heater in Boston despite their struggles this year. He has a 3.03 ERA with a 1.20 WHIP. The best team in baseball always finds a way to land the right players, and this feels as much like a Dodgers-like move as it can get,” Wynston Wilcox wrote.
Gray has been one of the more consistent starters in baseball for much of his career, at times even one of the better starters. There have also been times when Gray has struggled a bit, and that's something the Dodgers and other teams interested in him need to consider.
The veteran seems to have those days behind him, but history has to be taken into account here as well.
