Dodgers miss out on $93M Silver Slugger-winning playoff bat to Orioles in costly missed opportunity

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been struggling offensively, and they are trying to fix the issues as best they can. The Dodgers are still right in the mix for the playoffs, but their offense needs to improve if they want to make another deep postseason run.

Recently, a player became available on waivers who could have provided a major boost to their offense. Luis Robert Jr. was placed on waivers by the New York Mets.

“The Mets have placed outfielder Luis Robert Jr. on outright waivers, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The league’s other 29 teams have 48 hours to claim Robert, who is eligible to continue playing for the Mets during the process,” MLB Trade Rumors’ Connor Byrne wrote.

Robert is an attractive player when healthy, but staying healthy has been a struggle for him this season. Dodgers Nation’s Nelson Espinal urged LA to claim the veteran outfielder.

“Robert Jr. has the ability to help the depth of the Dodgers and give their two struggling outfielders some competition as well. He comes at a somewhat high cost given his season-long production, but if he can keep hitting the ball as he has recently, he would immediately help the offense. As everyone knows, the Dodgers spare no expense if it can help the team win games, and it is hard to argue Robert Jr. wouldn’t be an upgrade,” Espinal wrote.

Robert would have been exactly the type of player the Dodgers could use right now. Instead, LA missed the opportunity, and the Baltimore Orioles claimed him off waivers.

“The Baltimore Orioles take a $5 million gamble and claim CF Luis Robert Jr from the Mets. Chelsea Janes on it,” USA Today’s Bob Nightengale wrote.

If the Dodgers’ offense continues to struggle, allowing Robert to land in Baltimore could prove to be a significant missed opportunity. The chance was right there, and with the current injuries on the roster, he could have at least provided another experienced bat off the bench.

Robert has made $93 million throughout his career. The former Silver Slugger winner now has a new home with the Orioles, while the back-to-back World Series champions had an opportunity to add him to their roster. This could ultimately come back to bite the Dodgers if Robert finds his form in Baltimore and helps their offense during the stretch run.
