Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had a wild comparison for two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.
Roberts compared the four-time MVP to an exotic car. In a recent media scrum, the Dodgers manager used the analogy while discussing Ohtani's earlier offensive struggles, noting how finely tuned he is and how even minor disruptions can affect his performance.
“Shohei, he’s like an exotic car,” Roberts said. “He’s finely tuned … so when it’s out of whack a little bit, it sort of just doesn’t work. He’s very in tune with his body, and so with fatigue, with being sick, with travel, whatever it might be, there’s things that get you out of whack. And so that sort of led to, I think, some of the offensive struggles as well.
"But again, now I feel like he’s in as good a spot as he’s been all year, tuned in.”
Shohei Ohtani finding his groove after slow start
Ohtani started the season in a bit of a rut on the offensive end; however, he's turned it around as of late. After batting close to .220 a month ago, his average has ballooned to .302 and now he has a total of 11 home runs and 35 RBIs.
In his last 15 games, Ohtani has slashed .390/.471/.627 with 23 hits, three home runs, nine RBIs and 11 runs. The two-way superstar is on a tear, and on top of that, he's been tearing it up on the mound.
Ohtani is on pace to win his first-ever Cy Young Award. The 31-year-old holds a 0.74 ERA in 10 starts with a 6-2 record in 61 innings. He's been on an incredible stretch thus far, and if he can keep it up, Ohtani will be the first player since his former teammate and future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw in 2014 to win MVP and Cy Young in the same season.
