Dodgers linked to Cardinals $8.2 million flamethrower by ESPN insiders

The Los Angeles Dodgers have been the top team in the National League this season, as many predicted would be the case. They also have a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL West over the San Francisco Giants.

However, the trade deadline is fast approaching, and it remains to be seen what teams will do. The Dodgers might need some bullpen help, as Tanner Scott hasn't quite panned out.

Jeff Passan and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN listed the top 50 trade candidates this summer. Among them was St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley.

The Dodgers were listed as a fit.

"Helsley had the fourth-best WAR among relievers last season and is in a contract year now but has been notably worse this season. His stuff and locations are pretty similar, but the main difference is his fastball is getting hit hard -- with one byproduct being his spiking home run rate."

The Cardinals held onto Helsley in the offseason, much to the surprise of many around the league. But bullpen help is always at a premium this time of year.

The Dodgers have plenty of solid prospects that St. Louis would want. But perhaps a change of scenery could help Helsley rediscover his old form from 2024.

Last year, he saved 49 games, a Cardinals franchise record and was named the NL Reliever of the Year. He still certainly has value, and he would instantly boost the Dodgers bullpen as they try to push the chips for yet another World Series title.

The 30-year-old two-time All-Star is 3-0 with a 3.67 ERA in 27 appearances and has 14 saves. He is also averaging 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

It will be interesting to see if the Dodgers come calling the Cardinals for the right-hander's services.
