The Los Angeles Dodgers have spent much of the season battling injuries, as many teams do at this point in the year. Despite those setbacks, they are beginning to get healthier and have continued to play strong baseball.
One of the club's most notable injuries involved slugger Teoscar Hernandez. The Dodgers outfielder exited a game at the end of May and was visibly frustrated as he left the field.
“Teoscar Hernández was very upset in the Dodgers dugout after appearing to injure his left leg in tonight’s game. He slammed his helmet in frustration and Dave Roberts was shaking his head,” Dodgers Nation posted.
Shortly afterward, the severity of the injury became clear as Hernandez was diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain. The expected recovery timeline was around one month.
“Teoscar Hernández said his timeline to return is roughly a month. Since he only had a Grade 1 hamstring strain, he added that it could be sooner — but that he’s also not gonna rush his recovery, to make sure it doesn’t become a lingering problem this year,” California Post’s Jack Harris wrote.
On Monday, Hernandez received another encouraging update as he reached a crucial stage in his rehabilitation. If everything continues to progress as planned, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Hernandez could begin a rehab assignment this weekend.
“Dave Roberts adds that Teoscar Hernández could go out on a rehab assignment this weekend if his recovery keeps going well over the coming days,” Harris wrote.
The news is significant for the Dodgers, as Hernandez would add another power bat to an already loaded lineup. He also possesses a strong throwing arm in the outfield, giving Los Angeles an important defensive boost upon his return.
Hernandez is currently in the third year of his $66 million contract, and the Dodgers know how valuable he is to their postseason aspirations. While he intends to be cautious with his recovery, all signs point toward his return being just around the corner.
